Guarding Tess (1994)

Doug is a Secret Service Agent who has just completed his stint in charge protecting Tess Carlisle, widow of a former U.S. President, and close personal friend of the President. He finds that she has requested that he not be rotated but instead return to be her permanent detail. Doug is crushed. He wants off her detail. She is very difficult to guard and makes her detail crazy with her whims and demands. Doug returns with no idea of how to continue dealing with her.

After the murder of Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber); Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) is tangled, once again, into getting the scoop on a third killing spree. This spree revolves around the set of "Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro", and each cast member is getting killed off one by one in the same order they die in the script.

With the help of her ex-boyfriend Dewey Riley (David Arquette), who has connections to the cast of Stab 3; Gale and Dewey set out to solve who's doing this and who's next. After each murder, the killer leaves a photograph of Maureen Prescott (Sidney's mother). Could this be clues to the killer's motive, or simply just bait to lure main-target Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) out of hiding? The only keys Dewey, Sidney and Gale have to surviving this third unpredictable killing-spree are: the clues the killer leaves behind, the Stab 3 script, and a video-tape left by old pal Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy).

Traces the life of Johnny Cash from his boyhood, with loss of a brother and of his father's affection, to 1968 when his outlaw side and his unhappiness give way to the twin triumphs of his concert at Folsom Prison and June Carter's acceptance of his marriage proposal. Along the way there's his first composition, first recording, first marriage, daughters, being smitten with June, divorce, pills and booze, an empty life, and the Carter family's nursing him back to health. June eases Johnny out of a ring of fire.

The Godfather (1972)

Vito Corleone is the aging don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family. His youngest son Michael has returned from WWII just in time to see the wedding of Connie Corleone (Michael's sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michael's family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don's lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart.

Stir of Echoes (1999)

Tom's a regular guy, a utilities lineman, married, with a young son, his wife is pregnant; he hangs out with long-time pals in a Chicago neighborhood. At a party, his sister-in-law hypnotizes him, and he goes into a deep trance. Before waking him, she suggests that he keep his mind open. That night he sees flashes of violence and the ghost of a young woman. His young son, too, is "a receiver," but while the boy is calm and coherent in his conversations with spirits, Tom is confused and agitated. Over time, the young woman's story comes to the surface, and Tom begins a hunt for her body that puts him and his usually understanding wife, Maggie, in grave danger.

Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud (2007)

During a bitter family feud, Jodie Hatfield, (Amy Manson) and her boyfriend Ricky McCoy, (Bradley Taylor) decide to leave town to avoid being found out, but are soon caught in the act. Wanting vengeance, he seeks out the monster Pumpkinhead, and resurrects it seek revenge on the family. Despite being warned away by the ghost of Ed Harley, (Lance Henriksen) his vengeance plan starts out, and the Hatfield family is soon under siege by the powerful demon. Not accepting the legend of the creature and believing their arch-rivals are the real cause, the two families attempt to go to war, only to be stopped when Pumpkinhead attacks the Hatfield house. Putting aside their differences, they band together to stave off the creature before it's vengeance pact is completed.

Shot in inner city Sydney, Burke and Wills is about two young men - Burke (Oliver Torr), a fragile, troubled soul; and Wills (Matthew Zeremes), a naive, talkative dreamer - going through a life transition. The two are thrown together in a share house after Wills outstays his welcome in the home of his girlfriend, and a newspaper classified ad leads him to Burke, who has a room to rent.

The beginnings of an awkward relationship develop through beer-assisted conversations about cooking, travel, and the importance of satisfactory toilet visits. Common, everyday events lead the two men to open up about their lives. When Burke's much loved grandmother dies, his already fragile state is put under serious strain. Burke financially benefits from his grandmother's death which irrevocably changes his trajectory, shattering his fragile sense of stability and self. Burke's downfall inspires Wills to re-think his life and ultimately leads him to adopt a more conventional path. From this point, Burke and Wills' relationship splinters, and the two withdraw into worlds of their own where the other becomes the enemy. The areas the two have tried to keep hidden from the world begin to emerge, creating an inhospitable environment, impossible for both to live in.

A 19-year-old girl prepares to become a suicide bomber in Times Square. Her accent is not particularly out of place and it's impossible to pinpoint her ethnicity. We never learn why she made her decision - she has made it already. We don't know whom she represents, what she believes in - we only know she believes it absolutely.

The film strips the story down to its existential core. It focuses on microscopic movements, the smallest gestures, an economy of banal details. Inspired in part by a story in a Russian newspaper and playing off a history of Joan of Arc films, the film transpires on the girl's face. The minimalism of the face is confronted with the visual and aural noise of the city. Faith comes face-to-face with the possibility of failure.

The Insatiable (2006)

Harry Balbo (Flanery), a nerdy and spineless flange salesman, runs into a violent crime in an alley. He believes that he has seen the Head Ripper serial killer, except that it's a gorgeous female vampire (Ayanna) who can rip the head off a man. Nobody believes him, neither the police. Harry, obsessed by the woman, soon contacts a neighbor named Strickland (Biehn), which is a vampire hunter, because he wants to find her. They begin to track the zone where she hunts to locate her refuge.

Phillip Filmore is a naive, 15-year-old, preoccupied with sex, who develops a crush on Nicole Mallow, the new 30-something, French housekeeper and sitter to look after him when Phillip's father is out of town for the summer on a "business" trip. But Mr. Filmore's unscrupulous chauffeur, Lester Lewis, takes advantage of Phillip's crush on Nicole to hire her to seduce the youth, then draws her into a plot to fake her own death in a blackmail scheme aimed to drain Phillip's trust fund.

As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

Warm, wise, and wearisome as hell. Tom Hanks plays Forrest Gump, a simple Alabama soul who serves his country without hurting a fly; he saves his comrades in Vietnam, woos the dippy Jenny (Robin Wright), and runs back and forth across the continent. Hanks does his best to convince us that Gump is, in fact, a character, and not merely a bulging sack of virtues, but the movie takes the fight out of him. The director, Robert Zemeckis, is no slouch, as he proved in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, where he invented his own brand of smart, critical nostalgia. Here, however, the whole film is tuned up to Gump's pitch of gentle sweetness. The visual effects are neat enough, with Hanks showing up in old footage of Kennedy and L.B.J., but the movie just keeps on jogging, like its harmless hero, in no particular direction. With Sally Field as the hero's loving mother. -Anthony Lane
